How Do You Size a Ring?

The Art of Getting the Perfect Fit at Martin Busch Jewelers

A ring that doesn’t fit quite right can be more than just uncomfortable—it can be a daily annoyance, or worse, something you’re afraid to wear altogether. If it’s too tight, it can pinch and feel restrictive. If it’s too loose, there’s always that fear it might slip off and get lost. So, what’s the solution?

Ring sizing is one of the most common services we offer at Martin Busch Jewelers—and one of the most precise. Whether your ring needs to go up or down in size, there are different techniques we use depending on the style, metal, and structure of the ring. Here's a closer look at how it all works.

Stretching: A Gentle Way to Size Up

If your ring only needs to be made slightly larger (typically up to half a size), and it doesn’t have stones around the entire band, we may be able to stretch it. This involves carefully widening the metal without compromising the ring’s integrity or structure.

Stretching is best suited for plain bands and softer metals like gold or platinum. It’s a quick and effective method—but it only works for minor adjustments and certain styles.

Cutting and Adding Metal: The Traditional Sizing Method

If your ring needs a larger adjustment or has stones, intricate designs, or engravings, we’ll use the more traditional route: cutting and resizing the band.

  • To make the ring larger, we carefully cut the band and add a piece of matching metal, then seamlessly solder, shape, and polish it so the added section blends perfectly.

  • To make the ring smaller, we remove a small section of the band, then rejoin and reshape it to create a smooth, strong, and invisible seam.

This method allows for greater flexibility and precision while maintaining the integrity of your design and stones.

Special Cases: Eternity Bands, Tension Settings, and More

Some rings—like eternity bands with stones all the way around, tension settings, or intricate vintage designs—require extra care or may not be resizable at all in the traditional sense. In those cases, we’ll explore other solutions, like remaking the ring in the correct size or recommending spacer rings.

No matter the challenge, we’ll walk you through your options and help you make the best decision for your ring and your lifestyle.

Getting the Right Fit

A properly sized ring should feel secure but comfortable—snug enough that it won’t fall off, but loose enough to slide over your knuckle without a struggle. Keep in mind that fingers can swell or shrink due to temperature, activity, or even time of day, so sizing is as much about experience as it is about measurement.
