Why Do Diamonds Fluoresce?
The phenomenon is related to trace elements and structural characteristics within the diamond.
When ultraviolet energy enters a fluorescent diamond, certain defects or impurities in its crystal structure can absorb that energy. The diamond then releases some of that energy as visible light.

Can You See Diamond Fluorescence in Sunlight?

What Happens Under Black Light?

A diamond with strong blue fluorescence can appear noticeably blue under a black light.

How Does Fluorescence Affect a Diamond Indoors?

Can Fluorescence Make a Diamond Look Hazy?

Fluorescence is not a clarity grade.
A diamond can have VVS clarity and strong fluorescence. Another diamond can have SI clarity and no fluorescence.
These are separate characteristics.
Similarly, fluorescence doesn't automatically indicate that a diamond has been treated or is somehow inferior.
It is simply one of the natural characteristics that may be present within the stone.
Does Fluorescence Affect Diamond Value?
It can.
Depending on the diamond's color, fluorescence strength, market demand, and overall appearance, fluorescence may influence pricing.
In some color ranges, diamonds with strong fluorescence may trade at a discount compared with otherwise comparable stones without fluorescence.
However, pricing isn't governed by a simple formula.
Two diamonds with identical carat weight, color, clarity, and fluorescence grades can still have different values because their cut quality, proportions, transparency, and overall appearance differ.
This is another reason why diamond value cannot be determined from a single characteristic.
Should You Avoid Strong Fluorescence?
Not necessarily.
If you're considering a diamond with strong fluorescence, the best approach is to examine it carefully.
Look at the diamond under several different lighting conditions.
View it in normal indoor lighting.
Take it outside.
Look at it under bright jewelry-store lighting.
Move the diamond around and watch how it responds.
Most importantly, look for transparency.
If the diamond looks bright, lively, and beautiful to you, its fluorescence shouldn't automatically disqualify it.
In fact, fluorescence can sometimes allow you to purchase an exceptional diamond at a more attractive price.
Does Fluorescence Matter More in Certain Diamond Colors?
It can.
Fluorescence tends to receive more attention in diamonds with warmer color grades because blue fluorescence can sometimes influence the perceived body color.
In very high-color diamonds, particularly colorless grades, strong fluorescence may receive greater scrutiny because the market can treat it differently.
But again, the individual stone matters.
There is no universal rule that says one fluorescence grade is always good and another is always bad.
What Should You Look for When Buying a Fluorescent Diamond?
Start with the overall appearance.
Ask yourself:
Does the diamond look bright?
Does it appear transparent?
Does it have good contrast and sparkle?
Does it look attractive under multiple lighting conditions?
If the answer is yes, fluorescence may simply be another interesting characteristic of the diamond.
You should also review the diamond's grading report so you know exactly what level of fluorescence the laboratory has documented.
Why Seeing a Diamond in Person Matters
One of the most important lessons when buying a diamond is that specifications tell only part of the story.
Two diamonds with identical grades can look different.
This is particularly relevant when discussing fluorescence.
Rather than automatically rejecting a diamond because its report says "strong fluorescence," take the opportunity to look at the actual stone.
You may discover that the diamond is exceptionally lively and beautiful.
Or you may decide that you prefer the appearance of a diamond without fluorescence.
Either conclusion is perfectly reasonable.
The goal isn't to find the diamond with the "perfect" report.
It's to find the diamond you love.
